That phrase kept coming to mind as I followed the news of 2025 and watched values and institutions I had thought unassailable in the United States come under attack. From that climate, Wake Up! emerged. I imagine the piece on many levels: as a narrative of small stories across a stage, as a Brothers Grimm-style fairy tale—didactic, funny, and a bit gruesome—and as political satire in the spirit of Gulliver’s Travels. Above all, I hope it offers visual delight. The anachronistic, absurd image of mice living lives of electronic distraction in a crumbling Roman ruin, unaware the cat upstairs has finished off the birds and is eyeing its next prey, somehow makes current horrors easier to bear. Yet these hapless animals bear witness to the suffering next door. Each entry reflects the cost of corporate greed: oil spills, chemical leaks, deforestation, poisoned water, and ecosystems destroyed by companies cutting corners in pursuit of profit. Beside each disaster is the line “You saved $0.00,” emphasizing the central contradiction of the system: corporations justify environmental harm as cost-saving measures, yet consumers never see lower prices or meaningful benefits. Instead, the true profits manifest as executive bonuses and shareholder gains, while the public inherits irreversible damage. The length of the receipt shows repetition and inevitability, these events are not anomalies but routine transactions. Prints of these were reportedly very popular in early 20th century Central Europe and common in homes at the time. When I (re)discovered these as an adult, I noticed how they reminded me of prints I saw as a child hung on the walls of my Grandmother’s house who came of age in that period. The incident exposed the nearby community to Polyvinyl Chloride, a highly toxic form of plastic that caught fire in the factory and then burned throughout the area, exposing the residents to highly toxic fumes with residual effects that are still being researched. This piece specifically uses Polyvinyl Chloride fragments from recycled advertising banners to recreate images from safety reports and surveillance images from the incident. Using fragments of recycled vinyl advertising banners—material already spent in service of consumption—the work reconstructs documentary imagery: safety reports, surveillance photographs, aerial views of industrial incident sites. This piece specifically uses Polyvinyl Chloride fragments from recycled advertising banners to recreate images from safety reports and surveillance images from the incident. The weapons become the vases that are holding the flowers set against a stained and abstracted backdrop or in some cases stars from the flag of the United States. Like most of my work the primary subject matter is distorted and blurred lending itself to a feeling of a perhaps a vague memory or unresolved visual element that the viewer can decipher and interpret in their own way. I set up a visual storyline that allows the viewer to reach conclusions about.
