July 10, 1966 - Dr. Martin Luther King at the podium at the opening of his address at Soldier’s Field in front of 35,000 people. This speech was followed by a “Freedom March” to City Hall to post a list of grievances asking the City to end slums, housing discrimination, police brutality and school segregation to name of few of the grievances. Dr. King led a similar march from Grant Park to Chicago City Hall in 1965 which was a “Open Housing March.”
