The Promise Land
Diana Barr (Spring Valley, OH)
Mixed media: acrylic, print, varnish medium, 21” W x 21” H
Artwork:
This mixed media piece addresses the plight of indigenous women attempting to escape the horrible atrocities of hunger, oppression, rape, or death. Leaving their homeland they oftentimes face the same fates on their journey. In this piece a farewell message is given to her family as she braves the journey to a new life in The Promise Land.
Artist Statement:
In my artwork I strive to keep my spirits eyes open to see beauty and events around me. At times I need to express things that are scars in our earth, but these images are not generally reflected in exhibitions I have participated in.
As a child I was encouraged to make art and it seemed to be a natural thing to do as I grew up around many art makers, dancers, musicians and creative thinkers.
I engage with the materials that may help me create the image that I am striving for, however, it is the process of making the piece that fulfills my creative spirit.
