Ode to girlhood. This series grew from my observations of my daughter and the young girls that I have the privilege to teach. As my daughter moved into her teenage years, I watched her gradually let go of childhood—her toys untouched, her attention drawn to world of screens. At the same time, I was mentoring young Black girls as a visual arts guide through a summer program, where our theme last year was girlhood. These two threads—my daughter’s transformation and the energy of the girls I worked with—wove together into a reflection on what girlhood means, and what we risk losing as we grow. These pieces contain some of my daughters discarded toys, pony beads and hair barrettes among other things.
